Seward, Alaska Activities
Things to do around Seward:
"excerpts from Exploring Alaska's Kenai Fjords" Chapter 1 Touring Resurrection Bay by Road "
- "SEWARD'S CHAMBER OF COMMERCE is located on the Seward Highway, one-half mile north of the small boat harbor. I recommend that new visitors to Seward make the Chamber of Commerce building their first stop. The City of Seward takes tourism seriously and the Chamber of Commerce has knowledgeable, competent people to help you sift through the reams of brochures that are continuously updated with new information on activities, lodging, camping areas, charter fishing services, wildlife cruises, car, kayak, and boat rentals, city maps, and everything else concerning tourism around Resurrection Bay and the Kenai Fjords National Park."
- "THE ALASKA SEALIFE CENTER is located along the waterfront of downtown Seward, at milepost 0 of the Seward Highway. Established after the Exxon Valdez oil spill, it is dedicated to understanding and maintaining the integrity of the marine ecosystem of Alaska through research, rehabilitation, and public education. The Alaska SeaLife Center has a variety of marine mammals, seabirds, and fish displayed in underwater viewing habitats that reflect marine life along the Kenai Fjords coast."
- "The KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK Visitor Center sits adjacent to the Seward harbormaster building next to the boat harbor on Fourth Avenue. The visitor center offers wildlife exhibits, books, maps, and other publications, as well as film and slide show presentations on local history, natural history, and the marine environment."
- "EXIT GLACIER lies 12 miles northwest of Seward. The glacier spills from the 5,000-foot high ramparts of the Harding Icefield onto the Resurrection River Valley floor. This land-based glacier is the only glacier within the Kenai Fjords National Park that is approachable by road. The Herman Leirer Road (formerly Exit Glacier Road) turnoff is located at mile 3.7 of the Seward Highway. The 9-mile long paved road follows along Resurrection River’s eastern flank. At Exit Glacier, hikers are welcome to traverse the 8-mile round trip HARDING ICEFIELD TRAIL . Starting on the valley floor the Harding Icefield trail winds through cottonwood and alder forests, passes though heather filled meadows and ultimately climbs well above tree line to a breath-taking view of the Icefield."
- "Lowell Point sits on the shore of Resurrection Bay, 2 miles, south of Seward. The Lowell Point Road begins west of the Alaska SeaLife Center and follows the rocky shoreline to the Lowell Point Recreation Site, where motorists will find vehicle parking, picnic sites, and rest rooms. The trailhead for the CAINES HEAD SHORELINE TRAIL begins in the parking lot. The 4.75 mile long trail follows along the shore of Resurrection Bay to North Beach at the CAINES HEAD STATE RECREATION AREA."
